In all dissolution actions the factors that the court must consider in deciding whether to award or deny alimony include the following:
- What standard of living the couple established during their marriage
- How long they were married
- How old each spouse is
- The physical and mental condition of each spouse
- Each spouse's financial resources and sources of income
- The division of assets to each spouse, as well as the division of debts
- How long it may take for a spouse who has been financially dependent on the other to acquire the education or training necessary to secure suitable employment
- What contributions each spouse has made to the marriage (note that this includes not only monetary contributions but also the value of services rendered as a homemaker and parent and in supporting the other spouse during career building
